Here are a few photographs of the neem (and other trees) I took at my workplace with my mobile (Nokia 6233) camera…

My son, Arjun’s (his name finally becomes public, since mine had to recently!) next big purchase was slated to be a digital SLR camera – required paraphernalia for the Visual Communication course he is doing at SRM University.
The past two weeks was a veritable round of reviews – online, as well as sifting through back issues of Indian magazines dedicated to the field – Better Photography and Smart Photography, hurried huddles on Orkut with professional peers, and consultations with relatives with an interest in the art – as far afield as a great uncle in Hyderabad. They were almost unanimous in that Nikon would be the best bet – but the model….? That was a hard choice given the number on offer, though of course, we had a budget to consider (no more than I Rs 40 k (USD 825))…
On the 10th I happened to glance through the local paper and this article about Nikon’s new launches caught my eye. There followed another flurry of online reviews on the Nikon D3000, all of which were favorable, especially if it were for a first-time user. So off went Arjun with hubby to Smart on Anna Salai (Tel: 044-45120449) yesterday.
The MRP of the Nikon D3000 (with the kit) was listed as I Rs 37,950 (USD 782) in the newspaper, but they gave us a hefty discount down to I Rs 32,500 (USD 670), which is still above the recommended selling price in the West of USD 599 (I Rs 29,057)! So was it really a discount… or are Nikon’s prices higher in India than the West… or did I miss something – in currency conversion, perhaps?
Where taking pics are concerned, I am one of those point-and-shoot-at-sight types! I don’t like anything fiddly – and, until last year when I started reading up on digital SLRs (given Arjun’s projected course requirement), knew next to nothingl about them. Now terms like auto focus, F-mount, aperture, frames per second, and view finder trip, oh so easily, off my tongue… but I’m still pretty out of my depth with the detailed tech stuff. I found Digital Photography Review a great resource, especially their glossary.
Despite being technically challenged, I think I have a well-developed aesthetic sense (if I may say so myself) as I do draw.
Here us a representation of a couple of my sketches.
